Responsive Website Design – The Modern Approach to Designing …

shutterstock_216220162When you log onto a website, whether it is from your mobile phone, laptop or tablet, you automatically expect it to fit the screen (or the viewing area of the open Internet browser). This makes it easier to view and navigate, regardless of what you’re using to browse the Internet. But with so many different devices, operating systems, Internet browsers and screen sizes, how is this possible? With a responsive website design. Utilizing a responsive website design is the modern approach to website design. It also helps boost user interaction and offer you a better visitor bounce rate.

Why Responsive Website Design Matters?

Before the creation of the smartphone and desktop websites appearing on mobile devices, a website would only appear on a handful of different operating systems, most of which were slight variations of Windows, and only a few Internet browsers were available, with most users sticking with Internet Explorer. Due to this, most Web designers would create a website to fit specifically on an Internet Explorer browser while running on Microsoft Windows. When using a different Internet browser, a different operating system or a substantially larger computer screen, it would require you to scroll the page up and down or left to right in order to view all of the information.

Once smartphones took off around 2007, suddenly a new Internet browsing device proved to be a new challenge for mobile visitors. Yes, mobile phones previous to the smartphone offered some Internet browsing, but on a one to two inch screen, this experience proved limited. With smart phones connecting to a standard Internet website, users had to continually drag, scroll, zoom and scan in order to view everything, ultimately costing businesses hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue because mobile visitors would turn away from the difficult to navigate website and look for a website better suited for a different sized screen.

The Boost of Responsive Website Design

As businesses started to see a boost in business through mobile customers, designers were faced with a dilemma. They could continue to create a single website format for a traditional computer, or they could create different websites for every single browser, screen size, operating system and service type. Creating dozens of different designs for a website isn’t very cost effective and can lead to all sorts of problems. Instead, designers came up with a new website design know as a responsive website design.

A responsive website is able to fill out properly and adapt to the viewing space, Internet browser and OS type. This way, viewers have the ability to experience the website to its furthest potential while designers only have to create one website. With more and more visitors coming from mobile devices, making sure a website properly appears on a smartphone or tablet is essential. In fact, Google and other search engines now include this into search result algorithms on mobile devices. This points to the modern approach to Web design and the importance of responsive websites.
